The lyric drama was already known in Russia in the early eighteenth century, but during the reign of Catherine II cultural life, and especially musical life, expanded considerably. Many foreign composers, singers, musicians, choreographers and librettists were invited to perform at court. Some of them had brilliant carriers, while others remained just for the time of a contract. The abundance and variety of operatic performances testify the success of exchanges between Russia and Europe in the reign of Catherine II.
