Eighteenth-century Europe saw a literary and cultural redefinition of the concepts of “people” and “nation”, especially after 1770, and such changes account for various ambiguities in the discourse of the educated elites of the time.
The development of a cosmopolitan European culture was indeed marked by the outcome of new competitions, just as the idea of a transcending genius was beginning to emerge. Opera thus appeared as a European area particularly permeable to aesthetic, literary and artistic exchanges. The trajectory of Gluck, a composer self-defined as a “citizen of the world”, is emblematic of this cosmopolitan European culture, even though one can wonder to what cultural and spiritual spheres his music can really be related.
