The Grand Tour was an important phenomenon in France and England in the eighteenth century. This widespread practice promoted the production of extensive travel-writing that shows the evolution of European cultural and musical life, mainly through the description of performances and through observations on the reception of lyrical drama. However, travellers were also subject to influences and prejudices, and therefore not only artistic but also political and social matters have to be taken into account at the analysis of these resources.
