In the field of musical aesthetics in Germany, several articles have been published in which the authors pointed out how important the notion « character » is for the theory of classical music. However, little attention has been paid to the influence of a French theorist Chabanon on the theories of German classical music. This negligence can be attributed to the lack of studies on the relationship between French and German musical aesthetics in 18th century. We have performed a comparative study on French and German aesthetics, especially concerning to the relationship between the notions of « character » which Chabanon and a German theorist Körner presented. It was revealed the influence of Chabanon’s theory gave a substantial influence on German musical aesthetics, which is far from negligible.
